Curtis Bynum, Sr.,
was born in Thomastown, Louisiana,
on March 26, 1934, to the late Emma and West Bynum, Sr. He
confessed Christ at an early age and served for many years as a
deacon at Peter’s Rock M.B. Church on Dalkeith Plantation.
He was educated in the Madison Parish School System. Curtis
worked as an elevator operator at Bunge Corporation for over 40
years, until his retirement in 1996. He set an example of a strong
work ethic.
He was a quiet mannered man who enjoyed cracking jokes and
fixing every appliance in the house. He taught his family how to
farm, fish, and hunt. He showed us how to build a vegetable garden
consisting of sweet potatoes, okra, butter beans, collard greens and
mustard greens. He passed down the tradition of sausage making
and preparing cracklings and hog head souse. He took great joy
in seeing his family find their own paths in life. He showed us
how to age with a heart full of thankfulness, mercy, gratitude, and
forgiveness.
He was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Ora Lee; his children,
Curtis “Nick” Bynum, Jr. (Vivian), and Curtisteen Crump; sisters,
