On November 20, 1951, in Tensas Parish, CJ Sr. and Hattie Smith welcomed their fifth child into this world. They named him Perry Eugene Smith. He was one of 10 children, three of which (Margaree, Bobby Joe, and CL Jr.) preceded him in death. His parents also went before him to prepare a place in heaven.
Perry confessed Christ at the right time in his life. He did it when he was ready. Therefore he kept his faith strong. He was a fun loving, joking fellow that lost a couple of good friends along the way like June Dixon, Steve Cephus, and his uncle Plute.
He was a 1970 graduate of Tensas Rosenwald High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Army. His enlistment took him to many places for over 20 years, but when retirement was upon him, all roads led back to Newellton, Louisiana. When the time came, he came home and worked diligently at the Newellton Elevator for 7 years.
Perry met the love of his life, Connie Candler, and they were married on January 7, 1979. Their union produced a daughter, Kira, whom was their only child.
Perry leaves to cherish his loving memories, his only daughter, Kira (Victor) Tillman, two grandchildren: Joshua Robinson and Shamaria Sanders. Three sisters: Barbara Smith and Patricia Smith Watson, both of Newellton; Martha Smith Bartlett of Tallulah, Louisiana; three broters: Leroy (Jean) Smith of Las Vegas, Nevada; Benny Smith and David (Leslie) Smith, both of Newellton, LA; A sister-in-law, Sandra Thomas Smith of Baton Rouge, LA; a god sister, Thelma Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will be truly missed.
