“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle
were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal
in the heavens.” - II Corinthians 5:1
Wilson Lee Oliney was born on April 10, 1956, to Leon Oliney
and Ruthie Mae Brown in Lake Providence, Louisiana. He was raised by loving
co-parents, Ella Louise and Aaron (Jack) Middlebrooks, where he received his
first nickname “John Henry.” He was affectionately known by other family and
friends as “Soul.” He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age at Central
Baptist No. 1, under the leadership of Reverend W.L. Kent. He attended East
Carroll Parish public schools and graduated from Lake Providence Senior High in
1974.
Soul loved people. Although blind for the majority of his
life, he was well-known for his sense of direction, love of travel, and ability
to make everyone feel they were the most important people in the world. Soul
would sit at his CB base and connect with people all over the world. He could
always reach out and get a ride wherever. In the course of his life, he would
call over a thousand people in the run of a year to wish them a happy birthday.
We will definitely miss those calls. We all knew if no one else remembered our
birthday, Soul did.
Preceding
him in death were his co-parents, Ella Louise and Jack Middlebrooks, daughter,
Tonquita Vongaee Lewis, and brother, Leon (Merrill) Brown. He leaves to mourn
his passing: his mother, Ruthie Mae Brown, Lake Providence, LA; grandson, Drake
Weaver, Monroe, LA; godson, Ben Jones, Fort Worth, TX; siblings, Gloria (Amos)
Wright, Lake Providence, LA, Evelyn (Herbert) Thomas, Baton Rouge, LA, Octavia
(Roger) Washington, Inglewood, CA, Elizabeth (Duncan) Swan, Monroe, LA, Mary
(Robert) Brown-Robertson, Lake Providence, LA, James (Debra) Whalen, Sr.,
Monroe, LA, Diann Dawson and Leroy Dawson, Milwaukee, WI, and Ethel Baker,
Atlanta, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends
