Irene’s Story in Time
Irene Gibbs was born in Mississippi on October 16, 1942 to Annie Lee Hayes and Haywood Mills. She married James Gibbs at the tender age of fifteen. They would go on to have six daughters together. Later, she separated from her husband. She and her daughters moved to Tallulah, Louisiana for a new life in 1972.
She found work as a cook at the town’s local cafes, Chat N Chew and Dew Drop In. She also worked as a housekeeper/nanny. One of her special interests included performing at local nightclubs, singing with Rufus Wimberly’s band. Some of her favorite hobbies included fishing and billiards. In her later years, she confessed Christ and was baptized in 1973 as a member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church. She was a current member of the Council on Aging, where she remained active until the coronavirus forced them to close. She resided in Tallulah, Louisiana (a town she loved) as a citizen, until her untimely death.
