Virgie Mae “Bummie”
Gomez - Francois
“Bummie,” as she was affectionately called, was born May 2, 1934, to Reverend Antoine Gomez and Virgie Gomez in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. She entered eternal rest on Sunday, August 23, 2020.
She was reared in a Christian family and was baptized at an early age by her father, the late Reverend Antoine Gomez. She served as a member of the Junior and Senior choirs at St Matthew B.C. in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. For most of the years Virgie lived in Avondale, Louisiana, she served as a member of Historic Second Baptist Church in New Orleans. Prior to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Virgie moved to the Dallas area and resided there until 2014. While living in the Dallas area, Virgie primarily attended Friendship West Baptist Church. After moving back to the New Orleans area in 2014, she became a member of Franklin Avenue B.C. in New Orleans, Louisiana. Virgie loved attending passionate and spiritually stimulating church services, listening to sermons, and watching some of her favorite gospel music videos on line.
She graduated from Lowery High School in 1952, and attended Southern University. She married Joseph Francois III and moved to Tacoma, Washington. After her husband was discharged from the military, they moved back to New Orleans. To this union, eight children were born: Joseph Francois IV (Laverne), Byron, Iris, Don, Wanda, Gregory, Yvette, and Terri (Arnold).
After years of residing in New Orleans, they moved to Avondale, Louisiana. Bummie possessed a quiet, calm, and generous spirit. One of her gifts was cooking and preparing food for her family, friends, and neighbors. She was known and appreciated for her delicious brownies, where she lavishly poured her energy, passion, and love.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Francois III; her parents, Reverend Antoine and Virgie Gomez; two brothers, Reverend Edward Gomez and Reverend Percell Gomez; a brother and sister from another mother, Reverend Lloyd A. “Bully” Gomez and Cleo Williams.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her four daughters, Iris, Wanda, Yvette, and Terri; her four sons, Joey, Byron, Don, and Greg; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Gloria Mitchell and Marva Henderson; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
